Our Throttle Time program lets you try your hand at being a locomotive engineer using a vintage diesel locomotive, C&IM #31! Ever wanted to operate a diesel locomotive? Our Throttle Time program lets you try your hand at being a locomotive engineer using a vintage diesel locomotive. For this hour long session, the Throttle Time participant will first spend 15 minutes observing and learning how to operate one of the Museum's diesel locomotives. The Throttle Time participant will then spend 45 minutes at the throttle of the locomotive on the Museum's main line, under the supervision of a Museum engineer. The locomotive used for the sessions will be Chicago and Illinois Midland RS-1325 #31, built in 1960. The museum acquired this engine in 2020 and proceeds from this event will go towards painted the engine back into its original color scheme. In order to participate in Throttle Time, you must be at least 18 years old, physically able to climb up to and enter the locomotive cab, and able to operate the locomotive controls. Also available for purchase at the depot the day of your event: C&IM 31 Locomotive Cab Ride: Ticket for one person to ride and observe the Throttle Time engineer from the locomotive's cab during the trip is $31.Caboose Ride: Tickets for friends or family to ride along in the caboose during the trip are our stand fare of $10/$8/$6.Happy railroading! The Monticello Railway Museum is an all-volunteer organization in central Illinois with a 7½ mile long operating railroad line, and a railroad yard open to the public. We offer train rides on weekends from May through October (rain or shine), and we offer a number of special events throughout the year. We also collect, preserve, interpret, and exhibit materials and artifacts from throughout the fascinating history of trains and railroading.
