Low-income applicants may be eligible for a reduction in the state's application fee and Spanish-speaking candidates receive special consideration in hiring. "Over the years we've grown the number and diversity of firefighters that work to keep Salem safe," said Mayor Kim Driscoll. "Recently, however, we've had a number of retirements from the department and we're working hard to fill those positions. This is also an opportunity for us to increase the number of Spanish-speaking firefighters, so the department better reflects the community it serves and, from a practical standpoint, to improve its ability to respond effectively to emergencies. If you've ever considered becoming a firefighter, now's the time to join the team!"
