NEW YORK CITY — The vaccination rate for the city's youngest eligible residents is growing: Over 318,000 New Yorkers ages 12-17 have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 shot, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. The number is roughly 61 percent of the city's 12-17 population, de Blasio said, meaning that age group still has a lower vaccination rate than New York City adults, almost 77 percent of whom have been given at least one shot. The news comes as COVID-19 pediatric hospitalizations surged to their highest levels on record last week, CNBC reported, with an average of 303 new admissions per day during the week that ended Aug. 22. The mayor also announced on Monday that over 10.6 million individual vaccine doses have now been administered – 5,438,005 first doses, 4,754,703 second doses and 464,643 single shots. In all, 5.4 million New Yorkers – 65 percent of the city's population – are at least partially vaccinated against the coronavirus, de Blasio said.
