HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — As Havre de Grace recorded its 1,240th case of coronavirus, the mayor of Havre de Grace sent a letter to the employees of Harford Memorial Hospital Monday thanking them for their service. "You have been battling this pandemic for the last 18 months, facing wave after wave, and making sacrifice after sacrifice," Mayor William T. Martin wrote. "I write to you with a message of gratitude and hope." Martin contracted COVID-19 and recovered in August 2020. "Thank you for putting yourselves in harm's way," Martin wrote to Harford Memorial Hospital workers in a letter dated Aug. 30, 2021. "Thank you for caring about the citizens of Havre de Grace. Thank. you for coming to work when no one else could. Thank you for continuing to come to work while others are leaving the healthcare profession. Thank. you to your families for the sacrifices they have made so you can care for our community." "I hope this is the last wave of the pandemic. I hope staffing shortages and patient ratios will get better," Martin said. "I hope you will one day, when the pandemic is behind us and standing on the shores of the new world, look upon your sacrifices with pride seeing all the good you have done to make this world a better place." To prevent hospitalization and serious illness from coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has advised those who are eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine. As of Monday, Aug. 30, the Maryland Department of Health reports 60.87 percent of the 21078 ZIP code has been fully vaccinated and 65.5 percent has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
