Violence Erupts On Pittsburgh's South Side

PITTSBURGH, PA — A man was critically injured and a family was attacked in separate incidents in the city's South Side. Police responded shortly after 2 a.m. to a ShotSpotter alert on South 13th Street and reports of a gunshot victim on Muriel Street at South 14th Street. Officers found a man with three gunshot wounds; he was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. Violence Crime Unit detectives are investigating. In the second incident, police and EMS were called to the intersection of East Carson and South 18th streets for reports of an assault with injuries around 6:45 p.m. Officers found a family of four who said they had just left a restaurant a block away when they were attacked by two people. A woman in the family was tackled by a female who also grabbed her by the hair. The woman's husband tried to intervene and suffered a severe contusion to his eye from a male suspect. The couple's son jumped in to help but was not injured. Police took the two suspects, both from North Versailles, into custody. Latae Young, 27, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of simple assault, one count of harassment by physical contact, two counts of recklessly endangering another person, one count of disorderly conduct and one count of public drunkenness. Wesley Brown, 27, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of simple assault, two Counts of harassment by physical contact, two counts of recklessly endangering another person, and one count of disorderly conduct. The unidentified couple were reported in stable condition at a local hospital. Police said the attack appeared to be unprovoked. No weapons were seen and nothing was stolen.
