MEDIA, PA — Delaware County officials are planning to hold a vigil in memory of those who have died from drug overdoses Tuesday. At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Senator John Kane, Senator Tim Kearney, Delaware County Council, and District Attorney JackStollsteimer are hosting an Overdose Awareness Vigil on the steps of the Delaware County Courthouse. Members of the public are invited to join to remember loved ones lost to overdose and to gather to raise awareness about prevention, recovery, and hope. Drug overdoses killed a record number of Americans in 2020, jumping by nearly 30 percent, according to the county. More than 93,000 people died of a drug overdose in the United States last year, a record number that reflects a rise of nearly 30 percent from 2019, new data from the CDC show. Officials say the increase was driven by the prevalence of fentanyl, as well as pandemic-related stressors and problems in accessing care. The Delaware County Courthouse is located at 201 W. Front St. in Media.
