We are hiring a used book finder in the general Albany area. Your job: 1) Find cheap books at thrift stores, estate sales, library sales, craigslist, recycling centers, etc. (cheap/free used books are everywhere). 2) Scan the barcode of the books using the phone app we will provide and set up for you. 3) Buy the ones which meet our criteria. 4) Bring them to us and get paid on the spot. Who is this job a good fit for? - You want to make your own hours and do not want/need to be monitored. - You want to generate regular income directly proportionate to the amount of time and effort you put in. The more books you find, the more you make. - You are willing to find and drive to a variety of sources, like thrift stores, library sales, estate sales, people’s houses, etc., and don’t mind being in the car. - You are going to be active and go scouting at minimum a couple times per week. - You are easy to reach and dependable. - You like not being required to interact with people (although being social can help finding more books). Requirements: The only starting requirements are a car with decent cargo (SUVs are great but not necessary) and a smart phone (iPhone/Android) with 3-4gb free space on it (to run the app). You should also be able to lift and carry reasonably heavy bags/boxes of books. All other equipment and training will be provided. How to know which book to buy: Your phone app will tell you whether we want the book you just scanned or not. If the book is good to buy, your screen will say “BUY” and will be green. If the book is not good to buy, your screen will say “REJECT” and will be red. In practice: You will pay the initial buying cost yourself (example: 50 cents), and we will pay you a flat $2.50 per book. So, you get reimbursed through the $2.50 and profit the difference. Example: If the book costs 50 cents, you will buy the book and bring it to us, knowing that you will profit $2 ($2.50 –.50) after we pay you for it. If you bought the book for $1, you would profit $1.50. If you got it for free, you would get $2.50. If you bring us 200 books which you bought at $1 when we meet, we will pay you $500, and you will profit $300. We will pay you $2.50 per book no matter what you bought the book for. You may have found it for free or paid $2 for it. It’s all the same to us. So, it is in your best interest to find cheap/free sources or make deals with sellers to try and get prices down. It’s a strong dollar per hour job if you can find a variety of quality sources. It will be possible for you to find dozens of books in a short amount of time. With a bit of luck, there will be opportunities where you find more than a hundred books in a single day. There may also be days where you do not find much, especially until you get better at researching/make connections. You may not be a good fit if the learning curve would discourage you. Over time, the yield will be regular. There will be more feasts than famines. How long/often you have to work: We are looking for somebody who will go search for books at minimum a couple times a week. You will make your own hours and decide when you want to work. We will not monitor your day to day. As long as you bring a regular stream of books our way, we are happy. Why you should consider this job: The more creative you get about finding books and the harder you are willing to work, the more money you will make. It is essentially a treasure hunt and fun. If you know what you are doing, you can make solid side or full-time income (up to you) and experience the freedom of making your own hours/watch your effort and creativity pay off. We will not be monitoring you or telling you what to do when, unless you want help. Training: We will show you how to use the app and provide you with scanning equipment. We will give you initial research ideas for a variety of sources. We will teach you how to scan fast and efficiently. We will explain what level of damage to a book is unacceptable to us (mainly tears, mold, water damage). Since this is a win-win setup, we will do our best to set you up for success and support you on an on-going basis. We are easy to reach and happy to help you plan/give you leads. How you will get paid: You will meet with us at regular intervals (example: bi-weekly) at a location which works for everyone (we will meet you halfway). You must be willing to drive up to an hour to meet us, depending on where exactly you live (and this meeting can be paired with a scouting session/path for you). Once we meet, we will count the books you bring and double check their condition. You will then get paid $2.50 per book you found. (If you would like to be paid immediately and are willing to drive to us, we will meet and pay you as soon as possible.)
