19th Annual Shower of Love to feature Ulice E. Payne Jr. as Keynote Speaker The Christ Child Society invites residents of the Greater Milwaukee area to their 19th annual Shower of Love, a benefit luncheon on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, in the ballroom of the Wisconsin Club - City Club, 900 W. Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee Wisconsin. The purpose of the Shower of Love is to raise money for the Christ Child Society of Milwaukee’s Layette (Baby Bundles) Program that provides baby clothing and other items to needy newborns at hospitals in the Greater Milwaukee area. The event will begin with a social at 10:30 am during which a raffle and a silent auction will be held. During this time, attendees are encouraged to contribute an unwrapped “new” baby item for the Christ Child Society’s Layette (Baby Bundles) Program. Needed Items include: Crib Blankets, Receiving Blankets, Onesies, 3–6-month baby clothes, Sweater Sets, Knit Hats, Blanket Sleepers, Sleep and Play Outfits, Socks, Diapers, newborn or Size 1, Bottles or Board Books. At 11:45 am, Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki will open the event with a prayer after which lunch will be served. After lunch, the keynote speaker, Ulice E. Payne Jr., who graduated from Marquette University in 1978 and Marquette University Law School in 1982, will speak on “Empowering Disadvantaged Children in a Changing World.” Payne, a well-known Milwaukee lawyer, was a member of the 1977 Marquette University championship basketball team. He was the first African American President and CEO of the Milwaukee Brewers, and is the founder and President of Addison Clifton, LLC, a global trade compliance firm. Active in the Milwaukee community, Payne has served as a director on a variety of Boards including The Medical College of Wisconsin, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music to name a few. In addition, he played a pivotal role in the development of Miller Park.. In addition, Ulice Payne has chaired the National Board of Directors for the YMCA of the United States and has served as chairman of the board for the Bradley Center Sports and Entertainment Corporation, the Wisconsin World Trade Center, and the U.S. Department of Commerce-Wisconsin District Export Council. He currently serves as an Officer of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce Board of Directors. Payne has also received many awards and honors. In 1996, he was inducted into the Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame. In 2004, Payne received an Honorary Doctor of Law degree from Marian College. In 2010, he received the Marquette University Law School Alumnus of the Year Award. In 2013, he was inducted into the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Hall of Fame. Then in 2017, Savoy Magazine named Ulice Payne one of 2017's Most Influential Black Corporate Directors. The cost to attend the Shower of Love, a very special and inspiring fundraising event that helps clothe needy newborns in the Greater Milwaukee area, is $75.00 per person of which $30.00 is tax deductible. The co-chairmen of the 19th Annual Shower of Love are Judy Janssen and Janice Miller. The Christ Child Society of Milwaukee was founded in 1948. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit all volunteer Catholic organization who welcomes members of all faiths, dedicated to “expressing their love of the Christ Child by service to all of God’s children.” It is part of a larger national organization founded in 1887 in Washington DC whose purpose is to “challenge poverty one child at a time.” There are now 45 chapters throughout the United States. The Milwaukee Chapter of the Christ Child Society provides a variety of programs to help children in the Greater Milwaukee area. Our members: • Make or purchase a variety of baby clothing items, assemble them into Layettes (Baby Bundles) and then deliver them to area hospitals who give them to needy newborns. • Assemble and deliver My Stuff Bags which are filled with basic clothing items to social service agencies who give them to children when they are being removed from their homes because of abuse, neglect, or disaster. • Host a Second Saturday Program for mothers and their children who have received our layettes where they receive a free lunch and enjoy programs and activities that encourage good parenting, and literacy. • Volunteer as Tutors and Library Aides at Blessed Savior Elementary School. • Research requests and allocate aid to elementary and high schools for unmet needs. • Conduct annual children’s vision screenings at 12 parochial schools • Operate a Resale Shop/ Boutique located at the Merrick Center, 4033 W. Good Hope Road in Milwaukee Wisconsin. The 2021-2022 Co-Presidents of the Christ Child Society of Milwaukee are Holly Ryan and Ginny Jurken.
