A program that explores the tragedies of social injustice through the lens of Spirituals and Folk Songs arranged by Black Composers. The Negro Spiritual serves as one of America's most influential and distinctive musical achievements. Inspired by the harsh and cruel conditions of enslaved people, Spirituals were created and employed to comfort, inform, and to celebrate lived experiences. Spirituals have since provided inspiration for future generations to combat the atrocities of social injustice. In an effort to reimagine social justice, Gavin Wigginson is now employing the songs of his ancestors to inspire new thinking on what social justice could be for our country and the world. Spiritual Reflections will explore the tragedies of social injustice through the lens of Spirituals and Folk Songs that have been arranged by 20th and 21st Century Black Composers. Each song will be preceded by a reading and a reflective pause to honor victims. Gavin serves as the Concert Choir Director and Instructor of Applied Voice at LeMoyne-Owen College, and as a Fellowship Coach with the Memphis Music Initiative.
