Here are the top stories in Beaverton today: There's a home in Beaverton for refugees of the war in Afghanistan, City Council stated at the August 24 meeting. The group declared the city a sanctuary for Afghanistan refugees. Mayor Beaty said she would continue to work with council members on policy and funding mechanisms to aid the resettlement process for those affected by the crisis. (Press Release Desk)Forest fires have become increasingly impactful in the Pacific Northwest, and one company is expanding its ability to help out. DroneSeed started out in 2015, winning the Oregon Technology Business Center and the city of Beaverton's $100K Startup Challenge. The company utilizes drones to replant deforested areas much faster than forest workers can by hand. Now DroneSeed has purchased Silvaseed, the western United States' largest forestry seed supplier, making replanting efforts even more efficient. (Pamplin Media Group) It's a blast from the past at TriMet's Elmonica Operations Facility as workers unearth a time capsule left by Beaver Acres Elementary School students in 1996. Although the students intended it to be opened in January 2020, TriMet officials decided to postpone until last Saturday due to the pandemic. When the time finally came for the big reveal, the capsule opened to reveal a nostalgic collection of students' drawings, writings and memorabilia. (KOIN) Here's an overview from late last week of COVID-19 stats for Washington County: 227 new cases were reported in a single day, and a 74-year-old woman who tested positive died on Thursday. Overall, Oregon saw 3,207 new confirmed and presumptive cases and 20 deaths that day. (Pamplin Media Group) With COVID-19 cases reaching the highest levels statewide, schools are making some changes. Modifications in Beaverton schools include upgraded air filters and the addition of air purifiers to special education spaces where some exempt students won't be wearing masks.
