Learn about how to grow sunflowers to remediate contaminated urban soils on vacant lots in Baltimore City.
Did you know sunflowers are one of our most powerful allies for regenerating contaminated urban soils? Sunflowers are hyperaccumulators which means they have the ability to take up high concentrations of toxic materials in their tissues which extract heavy metals and many other pollutants from the soil. They can be used to create a more safe and beautiful environment in our city while feeding pollinators and birds. Join us on Friday September 10th from 6 to 7pm on Rhizae Renewal Collective’s phytoremediation lot in Johnston Square to learn more about how to grow sunflowers to save the world!
Bio for Rhizae Renewal Collective
Rhizae Renewal Collective began to bioremediate 1316 Valley Street in 2017. Initially partnered with Charm City Farms, they now work beside the Johnston Square Community Association and the 6th Branch as well as plant and fungi allies. They will share cross comparative data from soil and sunflower samples and discuss the history/future of this project.
