Description

Volunteer as a mechanic or general helper We need volunteer bike mechanics to help fix bikes and teach their owners how what is being fixed. All level of experience welcome. We also need a few volunteers to help set up, take down, and checkin clients. And we need an LCI instructor to collect repair tickets, teach ABC Quick Check, do a super quick overview of the LCI Need to Know (giving out the VTA bike map), and doing a final pitch to persuade the client to become an SVBC member. Actually all volunteers should encourage clients to become SVBC members -- SVBC is key for making biking safer, improving health, and solving climate change. This event has 3 parts. It should take 45-60 minutes in total for each client (mechanics and other volunteers are there from 10am to 3:30pm) Evaluation: Our volunteer mechanics will evaluate the state of your bike and decide what needs to be fixed. We are able to do basic repairs, such as fixing/replacing brakes & cables, fixing flat tires, repairing/replacing chains, adjusting seats, adjusting handlebars, and aligning derailleurs. If a bike requires more complicated repairs, we will refer you to a bike shop. Fixing: Our volunteer mechanics will perform basic maintenance and repairs to your bike and will teach you along the way. If a replacement part is needed, you can walk across the street to Walt's Cycle and purchase the part. Teaching: A certified League of American Bicyclists Instructor will teach you how to verify that your bike is safe to ride using the ABC Quick Check method as well as provide you with some Need-To-Know tips to stay safe while biking. Who: All members of the public, but must pre-register When: Sunday, Aug 22th, 11 am - 3 pm Where: Parking lot at Carroll and Evelyn across from Walt's Cycle What to bring: Your tools A mask (unless you have been vaccinated) A canopy if you have one A table if you have one A bicycle repair stand We will follow all county health guidelines to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 and keep everyone safe by asking everyone to: Maintain 6'+ physical distance at all times Wear a mask (unless you have been vaccinated) Stay home if you are ill Note: If there is significant rain, this event will be rescheduled. We will notify you if this happens. Also, we are looking for volunteer bike mechanics (all levels of experience are welcome). If you can volunteer, please fill out this form and I will follow up with you. Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit committed to creating a healthy community, environment, and economy through bicycling for people who live, work, or play in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, is committed to having 10% of trips made by bicycle by 2025.
