NEWTON, MA — Newton Community Pride (NCP) is getting ready to distribute their second round of 2021 Community Micro Grants, with applications opening on Wednesday, September 1. Grants will be issued to applicants whose mission aligns with NCP to support arts and culture, service, and beautification in the Newton community. Prior recipients include Newton Theatre Company, Cappella Clausura Inc., Juneteenth Celebration Committee, Pan Asian Cultural Festival Committee, Indigenous People's Day Committee, BristolPark/Commonwealth Avenue Beautification Project, 4C Covid Remembrance Project and Service Stars' African Library Book Drive. "It is a pleasure to bring financial support to artists, area councils, neighborhood groupsand art's nonprofits wishing to build community through arts and culture programming,beautification or service projects" said NCP Board Chair Gloria Gavris in a statement. "In reviewing the 2019 CreateNewton Arts & Culture Strategic Plan, our Board of Directors was eager to embrace its recommendation to develop a micro grant fund to give seed money formore community programming to artists, arts and culture nonprofits and other groupswhose programming is consistent with our mission," she continued. For fiscal year 2021-22, NCP has doubled their commitment to the Micro Grant program and will open applications again on March 1 for a spring grant cycle. The average grant amount was $1,071.00 in the last round of distribution. "With the support of Newton Community Pride, FORJ-NNHS was able to host the firstever city-wide Juneteenth Celebration in the city of Newton," said Juneteenth Celebration Co-Chair Renande Loayza in a statement. "The event held space for joy, education, and activism and the funding provided by NCP helped cover the cost of the entertainment which was led by their willingness to be allies in bringing diversity to the city of Newton."
