Description
BELLEVUE, WA — The city of Bellevue is reminding drivers to be more vigilant in the coming days as thousands of students return to their in-person classrooms across the district, beginning Sept. 1.
In some areas, flashing yellow lights indicate when reduced, 20 mph school zone speed limits are in effect. In others, school zone limits are in place whenever children are present. Drivers must also stop for school buses when their stop paddle is activated or lights are flashing. Buses are equipped with cameras, and the penalty for failing to stop is a $400 fine.
Bellevue also has speed enforcement cameras around school zones at Odle Middle School and Sunset, Lake Hills and Stevenson elementary schools.
Police shared three other to help keep everyone safe:
Pay attention while driving. It's illegal to use a handheld personal electronic device while driving, even when stopped at a traffic sign or signal or stuck in traffic. Fines are moving violations that are reported to insurance companies.Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists when entering or exiting a school driveway or turning a corner.Stop behind the crosswalk at intersections to allow room for pedestrians. Pedestrians should use crosswalks and cross with the crossing sign or light. Families can also learn about the Bellevue "SchoolPool" program, a partnership that helps connect students with carpools, walk pools, "bike trains" and bus buddies. Learn more about returning to school on the Bellevue School District website.
