NORWALK, CT — Norwalk police will host a backpack giveaway Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at police headquarters.
In a news release, Police Sgt. Sofia Gulino said approximately 600 backpacks filled with supplies will be given away to anyone in the community that needs one during the event.
Police Chaplain Artie Kassimis has partnered with Norwalk police officers to collect donations from the local community to make the event possible, Gulino said.
According to Gulino, members of Word Alive Bible Church in Norwalk, headed by Kassimis, began the initiative with the hope to provide 100 backpacks to the community. After partnering with the police department, the original goal was far surpassed, allowing for a much larger giveaway.
Mayor Harry Rilling and Chief Thomas Kulhawik plan to be on hand for the event, helping families get ready and excited for the new school year.
Gulino also noted Norwalk Community Police Officer Hector Delgado took the lead role in the backpack giveaway.
"It was because of his tremendous work, successful outreach and familiarity with Norwalk residents and key local leaders that the initiative was as successful as it was," Gulino said in an email. "Officer Delgado has been recognized many times by the community and the department for his commitment and dedication to Norwalk, and its people, as evidenced by many similar initiatives bringing resources to those in need."
