Dear MSAD #51 School Community, We strive to review carefully all of our major activities and events and make efforts to avoid any major religious holidays with our planning. However, we failed on two occasions to avoid conflicts between a holiday that is of great importance to the Jewish members of our community and two events of significance in the life of our school district.  Rosh Hashanah, this year celebrated on September 7, is also scheduled to be the first day of kindergarten;  Unfortunately, there is not a viable alternative to changing this date. The second oversight was an original start date for middle school athletics falling on Rosh Hashanah, but this has since been moved to September 8 as a correction. I apologize for the district's oversight on this issue. I know that it is troubling for our kindergarten families in particular who observe Rosh Hashanah. I am sorry that a choice has to be made between observing the holiday and sending your child for the first day of school. For MSAD #51, it is a lesson learned for subsequent years.
