MERCER COUNTY, NJ — Mercer County and New Jersey have seen an uptick in coronavirus cases. But what does that mean for the county? As of Friday, Mercer County saw 74 new confirmed cases this week, with 14 new probable cases. No new deaths were reported. Since the pandemic began in March 2020, Mercer County has seen a total of 33,322 confirmed COVID-19 cases, according to data from the state. Officials continue to monitor the delta variant, which accounted for 93.5 percent of coronavirus cases in New Jersey over the last four weeks, according to data provided by the state department of health. All of New Jersey is now under a "high" transmission level of coronavirus, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of Aug. 21. The CDC defines high viral spread as more than 100 cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days. With the rise in cases, municipalities have been making an extra push for vaccinations, especially since the start of school approaches. Beginning Sept. 20, the Princeton Health Department will offer booster doses to those who have had the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for eight months. Other townships in the County are making similar plans. Patch recently spoke with Dr. J. Stacey Klutts, who works firsthand with the coronavirus, to ask some questions about the variant.
