DELAWARE COUNTY, PA — A Delaware County man has been charged with attempted murder for shooting at two police officers in New Jersey earlier this week, authorities announced on Friday. Arthur Disanto, 41, of Chester, was taken into custody in New Jersey Monday after leading local police on a chase into Philadelphia and eventually New Jersey, where he shot two Deptford Police officers, authorities said. Disanto was wanted by authorities for the attempted murder of a woman in Media in July. The incident began in Marple Township when police got a tip of Disanto's whereabouts. Police tried to stop Disanto, who was riding a motorcycle, and he eluded police. He was later found in Philadelphia, where he crashed the motorcycle, police said. Pennsylvania State Police said officers shot at Disanto, who then stole a Folcroft police vehicle and drove to New Jersey, where the vehicle was later found. The vehicle was reported to have contained SWAT gear and rifles, but the outlet reports the rifles were still in the vehicle when it was found. At about 7:30 p.m. that night, a resident reported a suspicious car parked outside his home, authorities said. Officers from several police departments in Gloucester County responded, and ultimately found Disanto in a wooded area behind Cape Cod Drive in Washington Township, authorities said. Disanto fled to Barnsboro Road, where he and a police officer from Monroe Township exchanged gunfire, police said. The officer was shot in the hand and ear, according to authorities. The officer has been treated and released from the hospital. Disanto then shot at a Deptford police officer, according to authorities. Disanto was also shot three times, authorities said. He was taken to Cooper Medical Center, where he remains in critical but stable condition. The gun he used has been recovered, authorities said. Disanto has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, six counts of aggravated assault, four counts of resisting arrest, two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, and one count each of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain persons not to possess a weapon and receiving stolen property. The New Jersey Attorney General Office of Public Integrity & Accountability has appointed the Camden County Prosecutor's Office as Independent Prosecutor. The Camden County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Unit and Special Prosecutions Unit will now continue the investigation of both the use of force matter and the potential underlying criminal charges.
