HAYWARD, CA —The city of Hayward last month was ranked No. 27 on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) quarterly list of top 30 on-site generators of renewable energy, the EPA announced. The top 30 rankings, released July 26, measure renewable energy generation of the agency's Green Power Partnership organizations, which include Fortune 500 companies, local, state and federal governments and a growing number of college and universities. Hayward moved up one spot on the list from the previous rankings in April. According to the recent statistics, Hayward's annual on-site green power usage is 12,026,394 kWh (kilowatt-hours), its on-site percentage of total electricity use is 56 percent and it has purchased 2,290,686 kWh of green power. The figures are based on annualized partner contract amounts, not calendar year totals, the EPA said. According to a release, in Hayward, renewable energy is generated on-site at the Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF). That facility uses solar-panel arrays and biogas collected during the treatment of wastewater to produce enough electricity to power the WPCF and other city facilities through a surplus of energy supply credits. Additional renewable energy is generated in Hayward through equipment installed on the roofs of various city buildings. The city also is a member of the East Bay Energy Community, which offers residential and commercial electricity customers energy from 100 percent carbon-free sources. Hayward's on-site renewable energy generation is part of its Climate Action Plan, which has resulted in the city cutting overall greenhouse gas emissions by 25.7 percent and putting Hayward on the path to carbon-neutrality by 2045, the city said. In the latest EPA rankings, Apple Inc., The Proctor & Gamble Company and General Motors, LLC occupied the top three spots on the list. Locally, the county of Santa Clara (No. 14) and city of San Jose (No. 15) also were on the list.
