MILWAUKEE, WI — Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett will be nominated as the next United States Ambassador to Luxembourg. The White House announced Barrett's nomination to serve as ambassador Wednesday. "I look forward to the opportunity to serve the interests of the United States and President Biden," Barrett said at a press briefing. "As a lifelong Milwaukeean, I will bring the values of our community to this new posting." The mayor's new position would have to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Barrett said. Common Council President Cavalier Johnson would take Barrett's place as acting mayor until a special election is called, Urban Milwaukee reported. Barrett said he would continue to focus his full attention the city until the Senate considers him. Barrett has held office since 2004 when he defeated incumbent Mayor Marvin Pratt. Luxembourg is between France and Germany and is home to about 640,000 people. Patch reached out to the U.S. Department of State and the White House for comment.
