LEVITTOWN, NY — A Levittown chiropractor settled fraud claims with the federal government on Wednesday, paying nearly $300,000 in fines for allegedly billing for treatments he did not provide. Gary Stein paid $290,197.24 to resolve allegations that he made false claims to the Department of Labor's Office of Workers' Compensation program for treatments he did not provide. "In billing for medical services he didn't provide to his patient, the defendant defrauded a taxpayer-funded program designed to assist federal employees who are disabled by on-the-job injuries," said Acting U.S. Attorney Jacquelyn Kasulis. "This Office and its law enforcement partners are committed to protecting taxpayer-funded programs from fraud and abuse." When federal employees get treatment for injuries through Workers' Compensation, the doctors use special codes when billing to show what services were provided. According to Kasulis, an investigation by the Department of Labor and the United States Postal Service found that, from March 6, 2014 through April 14, 2019, Stein allegedly used the Workers' Compensation codes to claim he had done detailed exams on a patient, when he had not.
