While it's too early to tell what impact it could bring to Texas, NHC officials are encouraging Texans to monitor the forecast and prepare for a possible landfall early next week. Here are the top stories today in Austin: As coronavirus cases continue to surge in the Lone Star State, Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order Wednesday afternoon that prohibits local governments and districts to implement a vaccine mandate. Here's what the order states. (Office of the Texas Governor) Early Wednesday, an Austin police officer died after his battle with COVID-19. The officer's death marked the first virus-related death for the department since the pandemic began. (Austin Patch) Austin police arrested a suspect Wednesday afternoon after officers searched for a couple of hours for a person who may have been armed with a weapon in central east Austin. (Austin Patch) Nearly 200 Afghan refugees, the largest intake among the Texas cities, are expected to arrive in Austin by the end of September. Here's what you need to know.
