By Steve Burger, WNIN Aug. 26, 2021 Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation officials are warning of the possibility of closing schools if the current COVID surge continues. EVSC officials are watching local COVID case numbers climb knowing that they may have to return to virtual learning at some point. EVSC spokesperson Jason Woebkenberg says they are monitoring the situation closely, but if case numbers keep going up, there may only be one alternative to keep students and staff safe. "Our goals is to keep schools open. But, the way the numbers are looking now, it's just not something we can take for granted for this year." Woebkenberg says a return to virtual learning would mean the cancellation of activities like sports and marching band. For younger students, it also means that parents would once again be scrambling to find child care and local employers would have to deal with parents being absent. He says the speed at which the Delta variant has infected large numbers of area residents caught many by surprise. He urged everyone to take note of the impact that closing schools would have on the community and take measures to help stop the spread of the virus. COVID-19 vaccine proponents may have a new ally in the Tri-State- employers. Two more COVID 19-related deaths are reported in southwest Indiana. Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation officials are raising concerns about being able to continue with in-person instruction because of the surge of COVID infections linked to the Delta variant.
