Yorkville High School Students Walk Out To Protest Mask Mandate

YORKVILLE, IL — Multiple students at Yorkville High School walked out of class Thursday morning to protest Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker's school mask mandate. A similar rally was held on Aug. 16 with parents and students to protest the mandate. The demonstration was allowed by the school, although a spokesperson for the district said it was not encouraged. A letter sent to Yorkville School District 115 parents stated students would not be punished for participating in the walkout and specified which exits they would be allowed to leave from and the timing of the walkout. "Our plan is not intended to make a political statement or advance anyone's agenda," a letter from Yorkville High School Principal David Travis said. "It is simply designed to keep all students safe, including students who wish to express their point of view in [Thursday's] walkout." A spokesperson from the Yorkville Police Department said about 50 people were present at the walkout and nearby demonstration as of Thursday morning.
