PLAINFIELD, IL — The Tawny Tortoise, a staple in downtown Plainfield, is closing its doors after 33 years of business. The shop, located at 24012 W. Lockport St., sold an assortment of antiques, kids toys and home items.
In light of the closing, employees are looking to sell what's left, which includes a small inventory of collectibles, priced between $1-$75. The shop will open at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
Stores fixures, including wood cabinetry, utility shelving and card racks, are on sale.
Over the years, The Tawny Tortoise gained a following of fans who took to Facebook to express their gratitude and thank owner Mary Alice Lambert.
"Always a great shopping experience, and even better conversations over the years. Plainfield is lucky to have a shop like The Tawny Tortoise!!," wrote one customer on the shop's closing announcement on Facebook.
"I was so sad to see the shop empty, broke my heart to not see the red open sign lit up. Mary Alice is a Plainfield icon," someone else said.
"I will miss the store and the friendly people," another customer wrote.
"Loved looking around at the variety of items—some are so unique and the older items always brought back memories. Always felt welcome there. Love the older big round table in the one room. Thank you," another wrote.
