CONCORD, NH — Redistricting begins in New Hampshire. Senate President Churck Morse (R-Salem) has formed a Special Committee on Redistricting with five members — state Sen. Jim Gray (R-Rochester), who will lead the group, as well as state Sens. Regina Birdsell (R-Hampstead) and Donna Soucy (D-Manchester). State Sens. Sharon Carson (R-Londonderry) and Rebecca Perkins Kwoka (D-Portsmouth) will serve as alternates. "Now that the U.S. Census numbers are available, we are ready to begin the redistricting process," Morse said. "The process of creating new district maps will be fair and transparent and will include opportunities for public input at joint hearings with the House across the state." Morse said he knew Gray and the other members would thoroughly review the census numbers, carefully consider public input, and then begin developing the very best maps possible. Gray, who also leads the Election Law Committee, said he and others would create proposals for the state Senate seats and Executive Council districts while the House will deal with its districts and the two Congressional seats. "I am looking forward to the committee beginning its work on the important task of redrawing districts," he said. The House Redistricting Committee, which includes eight Republicans and seven Democrats, met once earlier this year and also met on Wednesday. New Hampshire Bulletin reported Tuesday the House plan was to prepare some rough drafts of maps and then hold 10 meetings, one in each county, probably sometime in September. A number of political advocacy groups are calling for an open process, according to a story published earlier this month on InDepthNH. Here is everything going on in New Hampshire right now. Unruly Restaurant Customers: Beware! The owner of Newick's Lobster House in Dover is asking customers who are being unruly and impatient due to the time it takes to prepare food and serve it that they will be asked to leave if they don't behave, according to WMUR-TV. School District Will Allow Parents To Decide On Masks The Merrimack School District approved a mask mandate recently. But according to the New Hampshire Union Leader, after the first month, if parents want, they can opt-out of wearing the mask in the classroom. Students walking between classes will be required to be masked. Parents Should Decide: Edelblut NHPR has an interview with Frank Edelblut, the state's education commissioner, about face coverings in school — "I always start with making sure that we all recognize that parents really need to be the primary driver in health care decisions for children." Protesting Governor's Budget Members of Rights & Democracy NH and about two dozen protesters were at Concord District Court on Aug. 20 to stand in solidarity with five people at Gov. Chris Sununu's office on June 24. Attending the protest were former gubernatorial candidate, Andru Volinsky, and state Rep. Kris Schultz (D-Concord). The protesters called Sununu's budget "immoral," due to its inclusion of a late-term abortion ban, school voucher program, and ban on divisive concepts in school lessons and government training programs. "Granite staters are strong enough to have difficult conversations, and we will stand up and fight against anyone who tries to hold us back," Schultz said. "I am so proud of those who stood strong in their protest against Governor Sununu's budget meant to divide and distract us." Beware Of Paving Scams The New Hampshire State Police are warning Granite Staters about an uptick in paving scams, specifically, high-pressure salespeople attempting to access money from homeowners and then not doing the work. The elderly, according to an alert, are more often than not the victim of such plans. Beware of unsolicited offers to do paving work, do not let people into your home, and call the police if you think you are being scammed. Also, ask for insurance when contractors go door-to-door.
