LEMONT, IL — The Forge: Lemont Quarries will host its first fishing derby for experienced or beginner anglers on Sept. 26. The derby will run from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and no fish caught before or after those times will be eligible for scoring. Check-in will open at 5:30 a.m., and participants with boats are encouraged to come early, according to the event page. Families and other anglers who will be fishing from the shore should arrive between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. Marketing and Community Director Brad Donati said anglers in the derby can fish on the Forge Quarry (family and youth only), Icebox Quarry, the Great Lakes Quarries, and the I&M Canal. Donati said a variety of fish can be found in the waters, including bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, warmouth, black crappie, yellow bullhead, gizzard shad and carp. It is $20 per person for experienced and beginner anglers (16 and older); $5 per child (15 and under); and $5 per person if participating as family/child participants. All participants who are 16 and older must have a valid fishing license. Experienced anglers will fish for bass only, and are eligible for trophies and cash prizes. Winning categories will include the longest cumulative length and heaviest cumulative weight, the park said. Beginner anglers who wish to compete for trophies will be fishing for bass only as well. Family and child participants can fish for any species and will receive participation medals and special awards for the largest fish by species (bass, bluegill, crappie and carp), according to the event page. An awards ceremony will be held at the park at noon. For more news and information like this, subscribe to the Lemont Patch for free.
