Fosters Needed: South Suburban Humane Society Is 'Above Capacity'

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — The South Suburban Humane Society announced Wednesday it was over capacity, with 120 animals arriving since last Tuesday. The SSHS is asking for people to help make space for new arrivals by temporarily fostering animals, particularly medium to large adult dogs and kittens. Those who foster will receive anything they need to help take care of the animal they take in. Megan Schoenbeck, director of operations at SSHS, says the shelter saw "a surge of kittens" late last week. This week, she said, most intakes at the shelter were stray or lost dogs. For those who want a more permanent four-legged addition to their home, SSHS is also encouraging people to adopt. Schoenbeck said adoptions are slightly lower so far this month than they have been in August 2019 and 2020. Those who cannot adopt or foster may donate to the shelter.
