COLUMBUS, OH — Unemployment claims dropped in a variety of ways last week, according to new data released by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. Both traditional initial unemployment claims and pandemic-related claims declined versus the previous week. Between Aug. 15 and Aug. 21, 1,502 fewer first-time traditional unemployment claims were filed by Ohioans. During that same time span, 6,587 fewer first-time unemployment claims were filed versus the week before. Last week, potentially fraudulent unemployment claims spiked, with 4,932 claims flagged as suspicious, the department announced. All unemployment applications must be thoroughly reviewed before they're approved. Continuing pandemic unemployment assistance claims also dropped by 8,483 claims last week, the department's data said. Continuing traditional unemployment claims dropped from 142,750 to 136,163 last week.
