DETROIT—The FBI raided the homes and offices of two Detroit councilmembers on Wednesday, according to news reports.
The Detroit Free Press reported the raids were conducted in connection with an ongoing federal corruption investigation into the Detroit City Council involving Councilmembers Scott Benson and Janae Ayers.
FBI Special Agent Tim Waters confirmed the raids to reporters outside the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center.
"Why are we doing this? Why are we doing these search warrants? The citizens of Detroit have a right to a city government that is free of corruption," Waters told reporters.
The warrants come after Detroit Councilmember Andre Spivey was recently charged with conspiracy to commit bribery and was accused of accepting more than $35,000 in bribery payments. Former Councilmember Gabe Leland was indicted in June on federal bribery charges.
