Description

The purpose of this research study is to look at the immune response of people who are vaccinated with either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, also known as COVID-19. The immune response is how your body recognizes and defends itself against foreign and harmful substances. We would like to compare the immune responses between young and older healthy adults. We would like to study your immune response following the vaccine doses you receive through your primary care provider, workplace or other vaccine location. You will not receive the COVID-19 vaccine as part of being in this study. Again, if you have not already received it, you will schedule your vaccination at any of the offered locations. People receiving one-dose vaccines, such as Johnson & Johnson will not be eligible for this study. You are being invited to participate in this study because: -You have not had a history of having had the COVID-19 disease or have not tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the past. - You either plan to receive the first dose of a vaccination within the next month or you have received at least the first of 2 doses of the COVID-19 vaccination within the last 6 months. The study involves asking you questions about your health history and current medications. We will take measurements of your height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate and temperature. You will have blood drawn, where a needle will be placed into an arm vein, using sterile techniques. There is a risk for bleeding or bruising from the needlestick site where your blood is drawn, and some people may feel lightheaded or dizzy. For participants who have not yet been vaccinated: Following a telephone screening, there will be 7 visits. The first 4 will occur in the first month before and after each vaccination. You will be asked to return for 3 additional visits about 6 months, one year, and two years following your completed vaccination. All visits will take place at National Institute on Aging (NIA) Clinical Research Unit located at the Medstar Harbor Hospital in Baltimore or at our NIH Biomedical Research Center (BRC) Bayview campus in Baltimore. Each visit will include the same procedures and will take up to 1 hour. For participants who have received at least the first of 2 doses of the COVID-19 vaccination within the last 6 months: Following a telephone screening, there will be 3 visits. The first will occur within 6 months of your first vaccination date, the second will occur approximately 1 year after your first vaccination date, and the third will occur approximately 2 years after your first vaccination date. There is no direct benefit to you for participating in this study. We will provide you with copies of your laboratory results including your blood count and COVID-19 antibody tests for your records. We believe this information may help us to understand more about the immune response to COVID-19 vaccinations
