Under general supervision, perform skilled, journey-level tile setting work in connection with the construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of buildings and facilities; choose appropriate material based on job specifications; use hand and power tools; perform minor stucco and plaster work related to tile installation; match, cut, drill and fit tile, marble or glass block to desired space; mix and prepare mortar; set and repairs various types of tile, including vinyl and rubber floor tile; maintain tools and equipment; maintain records of completed work; and perform related duties as required. This journey level trade classification requires specialized training, knowledge and skills leading to comprehensive knowledge of the principles of tile setting, masonry and flooring. The Tile Setter is expected to provide outstanding workmanship, be safety conscious, communicate effectively with others, and maintain good working relationships. The ideal candidate will have completed an apprenticeship and or training from a recognized sponsor and demonstrate at least five (5) years of experience working in a commercial or industrial environment. The candidate will take pride in the finished product. In addition, the candidate must provide outstanding customer service and work well independently. EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive. This incentive may be 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% for incumbents in eligible positions based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification. AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: General Services Agency - Maintenance Tile Setters are represented by International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) and are eligible for overtime compensation. The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies. There is currently one (1) Temporary vacancy in the General Services Agency. TENTATIVE SCHEDULE OPENING DATE: May 24, 2021 CLOSING DATE: Continuous FIRST APPLICATION REVIEW: The week of June 1st, 2021 (and then weekly thereafter) PRACTICAL PROCTORED EXAMINATION: TBD EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Duties may include but are not limited to the following: Repairs damaged tile, grout joints and expansion joints in rest rooms, showers, kitchens, and other areas having tile work or any other tile like product including ceramic, quarry, fired masonry, marble, natural stone, composite, and epoxy; Matches, cuts, drills and fits tile, marble, or glass block using hand or power tools according to correct setting procedures; Selects, mixes and prepares mortar and/or concrete that is suitable for the job; Chooses appropriate tile, marble or glass block based on job specifications; Demolishes, removes debris, cleans and prepares worksite for tile installation; Floats newly constructed walls before tiling and installs floor and wall tile products and sheet goods; Inspects tiled areas in buildings to evaluate needed repairs and submits estimates on labor, material, and supplies needed and coordinates with other trades; Drives to and from a variety of worksites; Cleans and chemically etches tile in a safe and environmentally acceptable manner; Reads and interprets blueprints and makes working sketches; Maintains written records of work performed and completes required paperwork; Performs related work such as painting, minor masonry repair and concrete finishing, laying or patching linoleum flooring, and installing acoustical material; May oversee work of helpers; Performs other related tasks as required. TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list. EDUCATION, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be four (4) years of recent journey level tile setting work. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted California driver license and good driving record. Must be able to lift and carry tile setting equipment and materials and have full range of motion, normal strength in all extremities, as well as the ability to kneel. This assignment may require the ability to work weekends and evenings. May be required to perform occasional minor concrete repair. DESIRED Five (5) years' experience working in a commercial setting performing tile setting work. The demonstrated ability to provide outstanding customer service and work well independently. Completion of related training or apprenticeship program. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of: Tile setting methods, procedures, tools and materials; Characteristics of a wide variety of tile and related products and their applications. Working ability to: Estimate labor and materials; Safely operate all types of power tile setting machinery and hand tools; Ability to mix and prepare mortar, grout and thin-set; Communicate effectively with others and maintain good working relationships; Follow oral and written instructions and adhere to County policies and procedures; Supervise the work of others; Kneel, stretch, bend, reach, and lift necessary equipment; Drive to worksites. PRACTICAL EXAMINATION - 100%: Candidates will be required to complete several job-related tasks where essential job duties and the job environment are simulated. The method of completing the tasks, the time required, and the final product will be scored and evaluated. Practical examinations may also encompass actual job performance in the position and/or successful completion of any required job training. Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list. Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A thorough pre-employment, post offer background investigation which may include inquiry into past employment, education, criminal background information, and driving record may be required for this position. The successful candidate must submit to and pass the in-depth Probation Department and Sheriff Background investigations to receive clearance to work in Probation and Sheriff Detention/Jail facilities.
