MAKESHOP Appalachia Youth Workshops are an 8-week design + coding + entrepreneurship workshop series for middle and high school-aged youth MAKESHOP Appalachia, a youth entrepreneurship program, is teaching graphic design, coding, & design-thinking workshops to West Virginia youth to open up a culture of experimentation, creative confidence, real-world design + tech skills, and authorship of your own stories. The MAKESHOP Appalachia Workshops are a technology and design entrepreneurship-focused program, free for youth ages 13–18. West Side partners Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, Studio MESH, Financial Literacy Bootcamp, Fun Fitness Kids Club and Elk City Renewal Association are offering an 8-week workshops series to develop the entrepreneurship pipeline in Kanawha County. The workshops will give youth a creative outlet to develop coding, digital design, and other career development skills to develop a community-based project or company idea. MAKESHOP Appalachia Workshops are a custom curriculum using world-class design and technology experience from industry leaders like MIT, IDEO, RISD, and more. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MAKESHOP Appalachia Workshops include:Design Thinking –– Ideation and rapid prototyping, mind-mapping, positive psychology strategy, design thinking methodology, place-based inquiry, empathy mapping and empathetic design practices Visual Design –– Adobe Design programs (Photoshop, Illustrator), drawing transfer to digital, visual design, visual identity, and narrative development Intro to Coding –– Computer programming and basic HTML Intro to Financial Planning + Literacy –– Budgeting for young folks with Mavery Davis Intro to Entrepreneurship + Public Speaking –– Turning your project into a small business with Traci Phillips ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Participants will complete the workshop series with a taste of lots of different new skills— digital design, coding, entrepreneurship, public speaking and pitching to money management, and a deeper sense of place and community, with mentorship from community leaders. COST $125 for all 8 workshops –– Full Scholarships are available to all youth on the West Side of Charleston, made possible by TGKVF. This is a place to try out new things, share ideas, and grow together. A place to start small, but dream big. We are workshops; we are coworking; we are pop-up shops; we are community-led happenings. We are open to all, and we are ready to change the world, starting in West Virginia. MAKESHOP Design Lab is a project founded by Studio MESH, a female-led social impact enterprise and a full service communication design studio working with nonprofits and socially driven companies to improve quality of life in underserved areas through design and technology. MESH’s mission is to increase access, reduce inequality, and expand opportunity for all through its design practice. 10% of MESH profit goes to MAKESHOP Design Lab, its creative community incubator project focused on inclusive, participatory creative community and entrepreneurship development on Charleston’s West Side. MAKESHOP’s mission is to make design and technology accessible and inclusive to all West Virginians and create space to cultivate the creative entrepreneurship pipeline in West Virginia.
