NEW YORK CITY — The overwhelming majority of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in New York City are among people who are unvaccinated, new data shows. A months-long survey of coronavirus cases in the city strongly indicates vaccination provides protection against the virus and its highly contagious delta variant, said Dave Chokshi, the city's health commissioner, on Wednesday. The study found 0.33 percent of fully vaccinated New Yorkers were diagnosed with COVID-19. People who weren't fully vaccinated accounted for 97 percent of both hospitalizations and deaths, according to the study. Unvaccinated people are roughly 10 times more likely to be hospitalized from COVID-19, the data shows. "It is abundantly clear that unvaccinated people are in real danger and vaccinated people are protected," Chokshi said. He said the research should put to rest lingering questions hesitant New Yorkers have about the vaccine's effectiveness. "There's a lot of understandable questions out there," he said during his daily briefing. "There's rumors that spread and misinformation, but we want you here to directly what the facts are." Concern over "breakthrough cases" in which vaccinated people contract COVID-19 has grown. Chokshi said cases among vaccinated people have increased over recent weeks, likely because the delta variant is more contagious and an overall rise in community transmission. But he said such cases remain uncommon. "Although you may have heard anecdotes of breakthrough cases, let's keep in mind that the plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data,'" he said. Chokshi acknowledged the study runs from January to August — a span of time that includes months in which the delta variant wasn't prevalent. Even so, data from recent weeks bore out that vaccination provides protection for the vast majority of people, he said. Data shows about 0.017 percent of fully vaccinated people were hospitalized from COVID-19 on June 26. By Aug. 7, just 0.024 percent of fully vaccinated people were hospitalized, according to data.
