NEW YORK CITY — A prominent New York City lawmaker is Gov. Kathy Hochul's pick to be lieutenant governor, according to reports.
State Sen. Brian Benjamin is expected to be officially announced as Hochul's second-in-command as soon as Thursday, the New York Daily News reported.
The New York Times, among other outlets, also reported that Benjamin is Hochul's choice.
Hochul stepped into the governor's role after former Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned this week amid a sexual harassment scandal. She's a Buffalo native who previously hinted that her lieutenant governor would come from "downstate."
"There are so many qualified individuals, but I'm cognizant of the need for diversity and an inclusive ticket," she said. "And I'm going to name someone I believe the state will be familiar with, and be very proud of."
Benjamin recently mounted an unsuccessful bid for New York City's comptroller position.
