SAN DIEGO, CA — An inmate at the San Diego Central Jail died after he was found unresponsive in his cell on Sunday evening – and his cellmate was arrested on suspicion of his murder Deputies found the man suffering from serious injuries at about 7:10 p.m., sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver said. Though deputies, medical staff and fire department personnel attempted lifesaving measures, the man was pronounced dead at the facility. Though authorities know the man's identity, his name is being withheld pending family notification, Seiver said. Detectives identified his cellmate, 32-year-old Steven Young, as the suspect in his murder, Seiver said. Young was arrested and rebooked into the jail for one count of murder. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that records show Young was initially booked at the jail on Wednesday on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender and violating the terms and conditions of his parole. The Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy of the male on Tuesday, and the Sheriff's Homicide Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation, Seiver said.
