PLAINFIELD, IL — The second annual student-started Suicide Prevention Walk is set for Sept. 12 at Plainfield Central High School. Taking place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 24120 W. Fort Beggs Drive, participants in the free event will walk the track for an hour in memory of someone who died by suicide or in honor of someone considering it, officials said Monday. Along the walk, there will be booths featuring mental health resources, speakers including a representative from Elyssa's Mission, a program that provides suicide prevention resources to schools. Plainfield's Suicide Prevention Walk was started in 2019 by now-graduated Kaden Dolbee. This year, Plainfield Central senior Lydia Magemeneas is organizing the walk. "It means a lot to me that we are providing resources to everyone," Magemeneas said in a statement. "A lot of us don't want to reach out for resources and it means a lot that everyone is willing to support this event." The event is open to anyone in the community, and no registration is needed beforehand, either. Organizers will follow District 202's COVID-19 safety guidelines and measures, officials said.
