OSWEGO, IL — Between 2030 and 2050, Oswego's current water source could be at severe risk of depletion and no longer meet daily water demands, officials announced in April 2020. To inform residents about possible future water sources, there will be an open house held Sept. 15. At the meeting, which will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Grand Reserve Elementary School, 3142 Grande Trail in Yorkville, engineers and community officials will walk people through exhibits and answer questions about the state of the water supply, officials announced Wednesday. "Today, the residents of Montgomery, Oswego and Yorkville can turn on the faucet and expect clean, safe drinking water to pour out," the village said in a statement. "But what happens when the tap runs dry?" RELATED: Oswego's Drinking Water Supply Could Run Out By 2050: Village The village currently gets its water from a deep groundwater aquifer, and modeling conducted by the Illinois State Water Survey showed the groundwater water will eventually fall below the existing well due to the high demand in the area compared to the aquifer's slow recharge rate, Patch previously reported. Oswego joined forces with Montgomery and Yorkville to evaluate options, including tapping Lake Michigan's water supply by connecting it to the DuPage Water Commission Line or using the Fox River's water once it goes through a treatment plant. Civil engineering firm Baxter & Woodman began a process to evaluate alternative sources after it was approved by the Oswego Village Board last August, Patch reported. The first meeting to discuss options took place June 8, which also discussed the company's methods. Joliet was among neighboring villages that tapped Oswego's water source, a decision that changed earlier this year when officials voted to switch to Lake Michigan for its water by 2030.
