Looking for a dog

I'm looking for a dog that is more on the serious side, aware of his/hers surroundings, but not aggressive (to kill) towards animals of any kind. Age, breed, size doesn't matter. I'm looking for the right personality. We live in a house, large back property, lots of stray neighbor cats around, we have a very submissive pitbull that is my husband's baby, and a house cat that just does his own thing in and out of the house.
