2,448 U.S. soldiers dead. 20,066 U.S. soldiers wounded. $2,161,000,000,000 U.S. dollars spent. This is what the war in Afghanistan has cost us since 2001. And for what? For the Taliban to seize control of the country, while Joe Biden was literally on vacation. Over the weekend we have been inundated with scenes of the Taliban re-taking city after city in Afghanistan, and along the way, capturing American equipment that was given to the Afghan army. Yesterday they declared "the war is over" as they took control of the capitol in Kabul, while American forces rushed to evacuate U.S. citizens who were still stranded in the Capitol. How did we get here: In April, Biden announced that the U.S. would completely withdraw from Afghanistan, and that evacuation culminated in July when the U.S. left Bagram Airfield, our largest military installation in the region. Joe Biden was asked on July 8 if the Taliban taking over Afghanistan was inevitable? His response: "No. It's not... the likelihood there is going to be the Taliban overrunning everything and owning the whole country is highly unlikely. ...it took just 5 weeks for the Taliban to prove him wrong. Trump warned us: While former President Trump also wanted to get our troops out of Afghanistan, he warned against "hasty" troop withdrawal that "would create a [power] vacuum" for the Taliban to fill. And as the chaos continues... as American citizens are still trapped inside Kabul... as Afghan women and children confront the reality that they will likely be taken by the Taliban as slaves and forced bridges... Where is President Biden? His office says he "may address the nation in the next few days." People on both sides of the political aisle are calling this Joe Biden's "Saigon moment." A reference to when the U.S. has to emergency evacuate diplomats from the roof of our embassy as the Vietcong captured Saigon. A GLOBAL EMBARRASSMENT: U.S. allies across the world have put the blame squarely on Joe Biden. But none put it as pointedly as Nile Gardner who was a top aide to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher: "Biden has become an embarrassment on the world stage, and his non-leadership a gift to the enemies of the free world, from Kabul to Beijing. America has never been weaker at the helm in the modern era."
