An outdoor celebration! Reserve your free ticket. Kick off National Hispanic Heritage Month at our festive outdoor celebration! Featuring live music, dance, and a variety of hands-on activities, there will be fun for the whole family! Learn how to dance salsa, express yourself through metalwork, contribute to a Frida Kahlo-inspired community project, enjoy a traditional Ecuadorian folk dance performance, and so much more! Many of our community partners will be on-site with activities and information. Don’t forget to pick up something delicious from our visiting food trucks! Pick up a travel passport by the museum’s entrance, collect 3 stamps at different activities during the day, and receive a surprise! Featuring: Ecuadorian Folk Dance Performance, with Balcón Andino de Chunchi (at noon) Balcón Andino is famous for its ability to educate the outside world on Ecuadorian traditions through expression and dance. You’re invited to a joyful cultural performance by this Newark-based group. Salsa Dance Lessons, with Yoselyn Sanchez (throughout the day) A great opportunity to learn salsa dancing from exciting young talent Yoselyn Sanchez, Business and Dance student at Rutgers University, Newark. Latin Percussion Making and Techniques, with Mai Imakhu (throughout the day) Get ready for a fun, educational session with storytelling, movement, and relaxation. Participants will create their own instrument made from a wide variety of differently sized recycled containers and learn playing techniques. Repoussé Metalworking (throughout the day) Join one of our museum educators to learn the techniques of Repoussé, an art form that dates to antiquity and was widely used for finely detailed metalwork. ‘Constructive Nueva York’ (1960) by Francisco Matto, from the Museum’s collection, serves as inspiration. Music by DJ Ricky Gutierrez Mancilla (noon-4pm) DJ Ricky Gu plays the best hits of Latin music. Community Project: Live Colorfully! (throughout the day) Make a colorful flower to add to our community tribute to Hispanic culture, representing identity, resilience, unity, love of our families, neighbors, and heritage! We’ll be focusing on an icon of Mexican Art, Frida Kahlo. Be sure to visit the Museum for FREE during this event! Restrooms will be available for attendees who present a copy of vaccination card or photo or show a negative Covid-19 test from the last 72 hours. Portable restrooms will be stationed in Washington Park. Community Days are presented by Horizon Foundation for New Jersey.  The Newark Museum of Art is a not-for-profit museum of art, science and education in Newark, New Jersey. Open Thursdays - Sundays 10am - 5pm.
