In the 1920s, developers planned a "Venice of the North." Tour the site of the failed development with a naturalist. In the 1920s, developers planned a “Venice of the North,” to be called Lake Forest. That land is now part of the Arboretum. Hike to the site of the failed subdivision, discovering construction remnants along the way. Portions of the hike require stepping over obstacles. Free. Space is limited, advance registration is required, opens October 1 and closes October 24 or when full. Meet in front of the Visitor Center. The tour will be divided into smaller groups. Limit of 4 tickets per order. If the event is sold out, check back. Registration reopens when people cancel. Considered the birthplace of ecological restoration, the UW–Madison Arboretum is a teaching and research facility that conserves and restores land, advances science, offers public outreach, and benefits from community involvement. The 1,200-acre grounds are home to protected prairies, woodlands, wetlands, savannas, springs, shoreline, a notable horticultural collection, and Wisconsin native plant gardens. It also offers 17 miles of walking trails and 4 miles of biking road as well as hundreds of learning and volunteer opportunities. The Arboretum main entrance is at 1207 Seminole Highway.
