Description

Come see the gorgeous homes in Oakwood and learn about their history! You will even get to see the locally famous Halloween house! PLEASE NOTE: This is the same tour that is run every year on Mother's Day weekend, so if you have been on the Mother's Day tour, you have already been on this tour. This tour is not offered on a regular basis, so it will NOT be run again until Mother's Day weekend 2022! The October 9th, 11:00am tour is the only Oakwood tour that will run this fall! Governor Cooper has lifted the face mask mandate for outdoor gatherings and events. As a result, I am no longer requiring masks on public tours.  Of course, you are always free to wear a mask if you want!  This tour is pay-what-you-want ! If you enjoy the tour, please compensate your guide appropriately! CASH ONLY please! Usually, the guide receives $15 to $20 per adult, but you are free to give more or less than that, depending on how you feel about your tour. As you can imagine, the tour guide has to work hard to earn your appreciation! Tours have always been pay-what-you-want, but advance registration is now REQUIRED. If you do not sign up through Eventbrite for a spot on the tour, you will not be allowed to participate. Your email address will never be used for anything other than to communicate with you about the tour that you have signed up for! The historic Oakwood neighborhood is the oldest neighborhood in Raleigh at least partially outside of the downtown. On this tour, you will learn how much of the Oakwood neighborhood was almost destroyed in the 1970s. We will also discuss the main architectural styles in Oakwood and the stories of the people who built these gorgeous historic homes. In addition, you will see Oakwood's "modern house," which created such a stir in the neighborhood in 2013-14 that the story was reported nationwide. Other interesting stops include Pullentown, a tiny sub-neighborhood within Oakwood, the locally famous Halloween house, and a home where a made-for-TV movie was filmed that starred a very famous classic actor and actress. PLEASE NOTE: This tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, but may be slightly longer depending on the size and speed of the group. We will start on the sidewalk outside of the North Carolina Medical Society building at the corner of N. Person St. and E. Lane St.  The closest mappable address is 222 N. Person St. The tour will end one block away from the starting point. Plenty of free street parking is available in the Oakwood neighborhood on weekends. Several of the streets in Oakwood are one-way (including both Person St. and Lane St.), so please keep that in mind when you are looking for parking. There is some parking on the right-hand side of Person St. Great parking is also available in the 200 block of E. Lane St. Turn left from Person St. onto Lane St., and you're there! We will NOT be entering any of the homes on the tour; we will be viewing the exteriors only. In addition, there will not be any restroom breaks or stops for food/drinks. Tours may be cancelled due to a low number of signups, so please be sure to sign up in advance if you are interested. If you sign up for a tour and it is ultimately cancelled, you will receive notice via the email address you used to sign up no less than 18 hours prior to the scheduled tour time. Offering public pay-what-you-want walking tours of downtown Raleigh and the historic Oakwood district on various weekends throughout the year.  Private tours available on request.
