Swimming Prohibited At 7 Suffolk Beaches Due To Bacteria Levels

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Seven beaches across Suffolk are off-limits to swimming while another two are entirely closed after increased bacteria levels were found this week, according to the county's Department of Health Services. The beaches where swimming is prohibited include Corey Beach in Blue Point, Bayport Beach, Sayville Marina Park Beach, West Islip Beach, Venetian Shores Beach in Lindenhurst, Amityville Beach, and Gold Star Battalion Park Beach in Huntington. Tanner Park Beach in Copiague and Benjamin Beach in Bay Shore are closed altogether to visitors. The beaches will reopen when further testing shows the bacteria levels have subsided to "acceptable levels," officials said. Bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, the county health commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott said.For the latest information on the beaches, call the Bathing Beach HOTLINE at 852-5822 or contact the Department's Office of Ecology at 631- 852-5760 during normal business hours.
