WAUKESHA, WI — A 44-year-old man received a new bike from the Waukesha Fire Department after he was hit by a car on Aug. 14. Mark Froelich was riding his bike at the intersection of East Broadway and North Hartwell Avenue when he was struck. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Members of the fire department wanted to help him out because the wrecked bike was his only mode of transportation, according to Joseph Hoffman, assistant fire chief. Lt. Rob Harlfinger and firefighter Bill Stedman wanted to help the man out and were able to locate a slightly used bicycle that was in great condition. Harlfinger, Stedman and the department's crew donated the money to buy the bike, Hoffman told Patch. Patch couldn't reach Froelich for comment.
