Description

One day I was strolling with my brilliant 5yo. We came across what looked like a whole lot of tiny walking cane. She picked one up and asked me what it was. I told her it looked a lot like a gnome cane. We looked around and noticed that there were a dozen or more scattered around this palm tree. We concluded that there had been a gathering of gnomes the previous night and that they had lost track of the time. Gnome gatherings being rare as they were, they must have been caught up in catching up with rarely met friends and relatives. Clearly, they had been caught off guard, entirely, by the rising sun. They all left in such a hurry that they had left their canes behind. So we wrote a note to whoever had left their cane and offered it back. Gorfnil was so grateful for the gesture that he left a note thanking the human child for her kindness. He explained that it was a violation of the Grand Order or Gnomes sacred orders to even admit to humans the fact of their existence, let alone have any kind of friendship with them. But she had been so kind and thoughtful that he deemed it only proper courtesy to thank her. And he let her keep the cane, since he already had a few others and would have to explain how he came to have it back if anyone noticed. He even added a fancy red ribbon with gold trim for decoration. There were a few more correspondences, after that. When we left Florida, somehow we forgot the cane. We got just one more letter from a cousin of Gorfnil's after we moved to Pennsylvania when my daughter was 5. He said that he had found Gorfnil's cane put out with the trash when he visited the old meeting place in our yard and had brought it all the way back with him to Pennsylvania. That's a long walk on such tiny legs, too! I don't know what ever happened to Gorfnil's cane after that. Now my daughter has a son. I would love it if they could find some gnome canes in their yard one day soon. If you happen to be walking around SoFla and see little gnome canes on the ground underneath a palm that looks like the ones in this picture, please pick up a few and then contact me. I'll pay shipping plus $10 for a half a dozen of them. Thanks!
