GREENWICH, CT — Not on his watch. A Greenwich man thwarted thieves from stealing his own car over the weekend in Old Greenwich, according to police. Shortly before 5 a.m. on Aug. 22, a homeowner on St. Claire Avenue noticed his car — a gray Volkswagen GTI — leaving his driveway. The car was unlocked with the keys inside. "He went after it in a second car he owned. He was basically whaling on the horn the whole time and the car eventually pulled over. The subject got out of that car and jumped into another car that was in front of it and took off," said Lt. Martin O'Reilly of the Greenwich Police Department. The car stopped near Laddins Rock Road and the Post Road, O'Reilly said. O'Reilly urged residents not to take action in similar situations. "Call us immediately," he said. Thieves were still successful on Sunday, however, as a Volkswagen Jetta, also unlocked with the keys inside, was reported stolen at 10 p.m. from a home on Park Avenue which is a half mile away from St. Claire Avenue, O'Reilly said. The case is under investigation, and O'Reilly said that "it's very likely" the two incidents are related.
