Plainfield Mayor Proclaims Week Of Sept. 17 'Constitution Week'

PLAINFIELD, IL — The U.S. Constitution turns 234 years old on Sept. 17. To mark the anniversary, Plainfield Mayor John Argoudelis proclaimed Sept. 17-23 as "Constitution Week" in a special meeting and Committee of the Whole workshop Monday night. In his proclamation, Argoudelis asked residents "to reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties." Members of Louis Joliet's National Society Daughters of the American Revolution chapter spoke at the meeting to receive Argoudelis' proclamation promoting Constitution Week. Pauline Herpy, Constitution Week chairperson for the Louis Joliet chapter, said the chapter promotes the Constitution in schools, libraries and city halls. In her speech, she quoted Abraham Lincoln, who said at the end of the Civil War, "Our safety and our liberty depends on preserving the Constitution of the United States as our fathers made it inviolate." The village has been doing the proclamation for years, but this is the first year it's coming from the Louis Joliet chapter, whereas in years past it came from Amos Kendall, according to Village Clerk Michelle Gibas.
