CONCORD, NH — State emergency management officials said Monday while Henri was limited in its damage, it was a good test run. The New Hampshire Department of Safety Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management shut down its partial operations around 10 p.m. There was a flood watch still in place for four counties due to the swaths of rain the storm brought. "Henri provided a good test for hurricane season and proved just how quickly conditions and forecasts can change," Jennifer Harper, the director of New Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management, said. "We were fortunate to only see some limited short-term power outages. This storm gave residents and visitors a chance to take a look at their emergency plans and kits and make the updates they needed. With Hurricane season not ending until November, we still have a lot of time left and need to be prepared." Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30. Here are some other things going on in New Hampshire right now. Bring Your Mask To Market Basket If you did not notice, New Hampshire's largest supermarket chain updated its mask policy last week. All Market Basket stores are now "highly" recommending face coverings, regardless of vaccination status. Before, signs at stores said vaccinated shoppers were not being requested to wear masks. This change in policy (the new, new, new normal, if you will?) appears to have been made not long after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended all vaccinated people also begin wearing masks again indoors. Two recent visits revealed many shoppers and employees were not wearing face coverings despite the new request. Nearly All NH Communities Accept Fed Funds According to the Community Development Finance Authority, 99 percent of all New Hampshire communities will receive funds from the $1.4 billion American Rescue Plan Act. All but three of the state's 229 communities applied for the funds. A number of organizations, including CDFA as well as the state's municipal association, county associations, and others assisted communities in applying for the funds. The aid will be used to assist households with food and housing insecurity, small business assistance, affordable housing development or redevelopment, broadband and water and sewer infrastructure, lost public sector revenue, and public health support, too. Warring Wholesale Clubs In Nashua According to the New Hampshire Union Leader, representatives of BJ's and Costco are dueling with planning board letters about Costco's proposed project for East Spit Brook Road. SEA Backpack Donation The state employees' union is donated more than 100 backpacks to children in need in New Hampshire. The org's Campaign for Public Good set out to collect at least 50 this year due to issues connected to the COVID-19 pandemic and charities collecting backpacks. Employees, however, collected double the goal. The backpacks were given to the New Hampshire Department of Education, which will distribute them to school nurses around the state for students who need them. The education department has been collecting hundreds of backpacks for a number of years, thanks to the work of Diana Fenton, of the department's bureau of governance, as well as others.
