SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — As temperatures climb into the 90s, and heat indices escalate beyond 100 degrees, the Shaker Heights Schools released their plan to handle extreme conditions. "As the temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s this week, our principals and staff will continuously monitor that our students have sufficient water and stay as cool as possible throughout the day," the Shaker Heights Schools said in a statement. "The district will use the National Weather Service's heat index as its primary source of local weather conditions." While escalating temperatures may not warrant closing schools, the district said, precautions are being taken to protect students, including: During periods of high temperatures, classrooms will be aired out each evening with cool night air. Fans will be provided during the day to help with air flow. Staff will provide frequent water breaks and remind students to stay hydrated. Bottled water will be provided as needed. Students should wear light-weight clothing and eat light, cool, easy-to-digest foods such as fruit or salads. Heat advisories may be issued in northern Ohio on Wednesday.
